Less than 24 hours to his 50th birthday celebration, the convoy of Benue State governor, Dr. Gabriel Suswam and his deputy, Chief Steven Lawani was yesterday involved in an auto crash on Makurdi-Gboko Road.
The incident, which happened at exactly 11:20am on Saturday at Angbaaye, outskirt of Makurdi, Benue State, left at least seven persons badly injured although there was no immediate loss of life in the accident.
Suswam was on his way to Wannue in Tarka local government to flag off the construction of a- 36km road, while his deputy was to stop over on the way to also flag off the 2014 tree planting season before the incident occurred.
Saturday Sungathered that the accident occurred while a driver of a station wagon car, conveying passengers to Makurdi on top speed wanted to overtake other vehicles ahead of him, but realising that it was too late to apply his brakes rammed into the governor’s convoy in the opposite direction.
The crash left the governor’s SUV badly damaged, while its back-up skidded off the road into the bush, but the occupants escaped unhurt.
Suswam thereafter alighted and directed two of his pilot vehicles led by one Special Assistant, Terkaa Mawoo to immediately evacuate the injured to the Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi for medical attention.
Governor Suswam’s 50th birthday is expected to be celebrated in grand style on sunday, 17th November with the President, Goodluck Jonathan expected in the state to grace the occasion as well as commissions some projects.
